The Other Songs

We put up four demos to give you a taste of my musical style (or lack of coherent style, as the case may be!). But there will be eight more songs on Into the Flow. Here are the lyrics to those songs - I hope that these "teasers" will make you want to hear the finished products!

A Child is a Child

Lyrics and music by Jeff Spoden

A child is a child

No matter what land she’s in

A child is a child

No matter the shade of the skin

A child is a child

No matter if he’s outside the gates

A child is a child

No matter who his father hates

A child is a child

A child is a child

A child is a child

A child is a child

A wall is a wall

No matter who’s on the other side

A wall is a wall

No matter if you think you’re justified

A wall is a wall

No matter which side you sit

A wall is a wall

No matter who’s going to pay for it

A wall is a wall

A wall is a wall

A wall is a wall

A child is a child

A war is a war

No matter how loud the cheers

A war is a war

No matter how you close your eyes and ears

A war is a war

No matter how you hide the scar

A war is a war

No matter how right you think you are

A war is a war

A war is a war

A wall is a wall

A child is a child

A god is a god

No matter if he’s really there

A god is a god

No matter the language of your prayer

A god is a god

No matter what you do in his name

A god is a god

No matter who you bless or blame

A god is a god

A war is a war

A wall is a wall

A child is a child

A god is a god

Looking for heaven right down here on earth

A war is a war

Knowing what every single life is worth

A wall is a wall

When every poor man in the world is freed

A child is a child

And the last one has just what she needs

Hit on 17

Lyrics and music by Jeff Spoden

I met her outside Reno

She was playing 21

Pushed that pile of chips all in

And said “I’m almost done”

Winked a big blue eye at me

And hit on 17

When the dealer flipped that 4 of hearts

I heard my Baby scream

Chorus

I’m lucky!

And you’re lucky!

We’re lucky that we should meet this way

I’m going to take you to dinner

Then I’m going to take you home

And if we’re lucky, Lucky’s going to stay

It’s been 15 years now

And we got no regrets

Nice house, new car, still havin’ sex

And our kids don’t hate us yet

And if they ever want advice

‘Bout life and what it means

We tell ‘em only a goddamn fool

Would hit on 17!

Repeat Chorus

Bridge

Sometimes the fates are friendly

Sometimes the odds are mean

You take a breath and go all in

And hit on 17

Repeat Chorus

It Only Hurts When I Breathe

Lyrics by Jeff Spoden

Music by Bill Schaub and Jeff Spoden

I sit here a thinkin’

‘Bout how you didn’t even say Goodbye

My life is a sinking

Like the sun sliding slowly through the sky

It’s time to start drinking

‘Cause it makes it so much easier to lie

Chorus

I tell ‘em that I’m doing fine

I tell ‘em I’m quite relieved

I tell ‘em “I’m only sad when I’m sober”

I tell ‘em “It only hurts when I breathe”

When I heard you crying

I didn’t think it was because of me

You were always trying

To open up my eyes and finally see

Inside you were dying

For the man you knew I’d never be

Repeat Chorus

I stare through the doorway

Down the road that you took out west

You just couldn’t stay with

A man who wouldn’t give you his best

I’d kill for one more day

Just holding you tight against my chest

Repeat Chorus

Rock in the River

Lyrics and music by Jeff Spoden

You come home tired from a hard day

Life is taking you the long way

The sky is turning a scary shade of grey

I’ll be your rock in the river

You can’t count the tears that you’ve cried

The water’s dark, it’s deep and it’s wide

You don’t know how to make the other side

I’ll be your rock in the river

Chorus

I’ll be your rock in the river

Hold on to

When the chill makes you shiver

I’ll cover you

You need a friend who will stand and deliver

This I’ll do

This I’ll do

I’ll be your rock in the river

V3: When hollow promises have let you down

It seems all sanity has blown this town

Sink once more and you just might drown

I’ll be your rock in the river

V4: Dark sky hammers on your window pane

Responsibilities are pouring down like rain

Don’t worry darlin’ – you don’t need to explain

I’ll be your rock in the river

Repeat Chorus

We Never Thought

Lyrics and music by Jeff Spoden

V1: The sky is orange……Our nation burns

Try to forget……Try to unlearn

What we believed……Isn’t what we see

Blue sky on fire……In the land of liberty

1st Chorus

A silence hangs

Before the crash

A smoky haze

Of orange and ash

Maybe tomorrow

The air will clear

We’ve always known

It can’t happen here

V2: The country split……A clumsy dissection

Shrill sirens wail……From all directions

As freedom falls……And the body moans

The crows descend……To clean our bones

Repeat 1st Chorus

V3: The millions cheer……As kindness dies

And walls are built……Of fear, steel, and lies

The world recedes……The jailer grins

What keeps them out……Just locks us in

2nd Chorus

A silence hangs

Before the crash

 A smoky haze

Of orange and ash

Tomorrow’s come

With fire and fear

We never thought

That it could happen here

I Want To Cry Your Tears

(Every Parent’s Lament)

Lyrics and music by Jeff Spoden

I want to cry your tears for you

Want to steal each sorrow and pain

Take your weight upon my back

Try to soak up all the cold rain

I want to give you a world where nothing will hurt you

I want to give you a lover who will never leave

I want to give you friends that’ll never desert you

I want to hold you every time you need to grieve

Chorus

But it’s your life

You got to grow up

It’s your world

You got to show up

So I wouldn’t do those things even if I could

But I’ll listen to your dreams and fears

Soothe the cuts and dry the tears

Remind you of the beauty and the good

When you need more answers

I want to help you find what’s true

When it’s tough to love yourself

I want to love you enough for two

When you’ve lost your way, I want to be your eyes

I want to give my body for your achin’

If you need to hide, I want to be your disguise

I want to lend my heart to do the breakin’

Repeat Chorus

Bridge

Life is cruel and life is beautiful

And we’re just heart and bone

Sometimes tough and sometimes fragile

You got to find out on your own

Repeat Chorus

The Dealer

Lyrics and music by Jeff Spoden

I’m the dealer

Kiss away your sorrow

If I don’t have it today

I can produce it tomorrow

All around your neighborhood

Moving in and out

I keep my babies happy

Ain’t that what life’s about?

Chorus

I’m the dealer

                  Truth concealer

Soul stealer

Just tell me whatcha want

What you really, really want

This will make you happy

This will make you happier still

And if it doesn’t last too long

Just try another pill

This one if you’re lonely

This one if you’re blue

Got a thousand different channels

When there’s nothin’ else to do

Repeat Chorus

All across the planet earth

I do the white-boy hustle

Hand in hand with Uncle Sam

He loves to strut the muscle

Hoist that Coca-Cola, Boys

And toast to you and me

Well, I’ll give away the first one

But the second one’s not free

Repeat Chorus

Into the Flow – Part 2

Lyrics and music by Jeff Spoden

V1: Just walk up to the edge, launch your boat and go

Love and courage moving with the current of the flow

Scary to be out here so far away from land

A million more just like you who seem to understand

And every single one of them wants to lend a hand!

Chorus

Love is the only thing that makes this life worth living

And courage is what makes us brave enough to love

Thousands of years of needing and of giving

Hoping that somehow we get enough

And so we go....into the flow

V2: Trying to find some and nourishment to fill you

Your body’s craving candy that you know is going to kill you

Demons in your head are trying to play you

You can’t go around ‘em so you need to find a way through

Lookin’ up, tryin’ to find a god you want to pray to

Repeat Chorus

V3: Trying to find some answers up on higher ground

At the mountaintop the old sage smiles and says to turn around

There’s nothing I can tell you that you don’t already know

Don’t wait around for a miracle to show

The only god I ever found was out there in the flow

Repeat Chorus
